Our Story
Where It Started
It all began on the Middle Fork of Idaho’s Salmon River.
While on a wilderness expedition, our founder watched a guide split small pieces of resin-rich pine that ignited with a single match and burned long enough to build a roaring campfire. Fascinated by this remarkable natural fire starter, he began asking questions and learning everything he could about pitch wood.
Nature had already created the perfect fire starter.
Trees naturally produce resin when they’re injured, protecting themselves while creating one of nature’s most powerful sources of kindling. For generations, this prized wood was gathered and traded because of its incredible ability to start fires quickly—even in difficult conditions.
Inspired by this discovery, they began crafting what became known as Lightning Stix in 1970. Every piece was hand-split with an axe and bundled by hand for friends, neighbors, and local stores.
Soon, another idea sparked.
The Matriarch of the family thought instead of letting the smaller pieces go to waste, she blended it with food grade canning wax and carefully hand-scooped into what became the very first Lightning Nugget.
What started as a simple family project has grown into a trusted fire-starting brand used throughout North America.
Today our product the Lightning Nugget® is still proudly made with the same philosophy that inspired us from the beginning.
